Mathematical Modeling with M2Studio
Mathematical modeling is the process of solving open-ended, real-world problems using mathematics. Learning and teaching math modeling are nontrivial challenges due to its complex nature. To advance math modeling education, we have developed M2Studio, a web-based learning environment that provides a coherent set of novel tools for students to:
- Create and update variables as they write or draw to analyze problems;
- Build computational models as a diagram to visualize relationships among variables;
- Use a variety of mathematical operations and auto conversion for standard units;
- Inspect models using expression and unit validation tools;
- Test models with different input values and get instant results;
- Present their models in writing, drawing, and visually appealing diagrams.
To showcase M2Studio’s rich affordances, we have also developed a 10-hour curriculum module for Algebra I and II, and Integrated Math classes. The module includes:
- Modeling competency-based lessons;
- Lesson-based checks for understanding;
- Pre- and post- assessments;
- Teacher support materials including presentation slides, teacher guides, and handouts.

Current
In this tab you will find out newest and most updated materials for the M2Studio module. We recommend you complete all the lessons in order with your students. Under Teacher Resources, you will find slides that go along with each lesson.
2023-2024 School Year
During the 2023-2024 school year, we piloted our materials in a few select classrooms. In the time since, we have reviewed the student data and made significant revisions. If, however, you want to use our beta materials, we have left them here for your use. If you would prefer to use the newest materials, please see the tab Current.
