Data Biographies

WestEd

A collaboration between WestEd and the Concord Consortium

The Boosting Data Fluency project provides professional learning to math and science teachers from grades 6–9 to develop data-rich teaching and learning. This project brings together WestEd and their proven Making Sense of SCIENCE (MSS) teacher professional learning model with the Concord Consortium’s technology expertise and our open-source, user-friendly Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP) learning tool.

An integral part of supporting data fluency is access to datasets designed for education. The Boosting Data Fluency project’s Data Biographies introduce educators to curated datasets or dynamic data visualizations for middle and high school classrooms. Data Biographies are not lesson plans, but rather launchpads designed to support the integration of complex data into the classroom. Each Data Biography includes background information specifically designed to help educators explore the data and determine potential uses in various classroom contexts.

All Data Biographies include:

  • the dataset’s origin and dimensions
  • a description of attributes
  • investigation questions to initiate a data exploration
  • a link to the dataset or data visualization
  • standards that could be addressed with the dataset
